Love Songs and Oreo Cookies

You Do Something To Me is a great song. When I sing it, its heartfelt lyrics have the ability to actually transcend the awful quality of my voice. It’s always been my love song to my wife.

It was written by Cole Porter in 1929. It’s been recorded by numerous artists who have crooned this song to the “objects of their affection” many times in movies and on television. As I said, it’s a great song, and they just don’t write songs like this anymore. You can imagine my surprise when I heard it used in a commercial to sell Oreo cookies.

The year 2012 marked the 100th anniversary of the Oreo cookie. According to my research, Nabisco has sold almost 450 billion of them, and it’s been reported that Oreos were the best selling cookie in the 20th century. In my mind, this makes them an American icon, along with the likes of Big Macs, Coca-Cola, Campbell’s soup, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, and Snickers.

Back in 1979, when 52 Americans were held hostage in Iran, and then released 444 days later, it was interesting to read about the first things they requested when they were able to return to our American culture. Well, if it were me re-entering this country after suffering the deprivations of being away, I’d request Oreo cookies. I’d open a bag, select one, separate the two chocolate wafers, lick off the creamed filling, and then I’d dip them in milk. MmMmmmm.

So, a love song to a cookie? ‘Makes perfect sense to me, and why not? Love interests come and go, but Oreo cookies are forever.
